Sixteenth-ranked Villanova entered the game 24-6 and 12-5 in the Big East and attempting to secure a top four seed and two byes in the Big East tournament. Providence came into the game 18-11 and 10-7 in the league and fighting for its NCAA tournament life. Something had to give.
