Catching Up With Donovan Mitchell

Donovan Mitchell

Providence has been a mainstay in Donovan Mitchell's recruitment from early in his high school career and while his list of offers continues to grow, the Friars position has not changed.

After a successful season that included a Big East Championship and NCAA tournament berth, Ed Cooley has placed the Providence College program in a position for sustained success even earlier than he and his staff had anticipated. While the staff continues to work to round out the 2014 recruiting class, eyes continue to be on the 2015 class to continue to build sustained success at PC.

Since arriving at Providence College as head coach, Ed Cooley has been no stranger in the gym at Brewster Academy, as he's made countless trips to Brewster practices, open gyms, and games. Brewster head man Jason Smith, along with several players have taken notice of Cooley sitting front and center for so many Bobcats games, including 2015 recruit Donovan Mitchell who states, "it definitely sends a message to me saying that they want me and they will take the time out to be at my games, which makes me feel very special."

While Mitchell's recruitment has been on a steady rise since his sophomore year, his recruitment has reached new heights after his transfer from the Canterbury School (CT) to Brewster Academy (NH). According to Mitchell, Providence, Florida, Marquette, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Boston College, and Creighton are the schools that he hears from the most right now. Mitchell said he plans to visit all of the schools that have offered and are showing the most interest, when asked about visits to schools he has not already seen.

The transfer to Brewster Academy has certainly had a positive impact on Mitchell both as a student and as a player. He highlights winning a National Championship and the NEPSAC Championship as the best parts of his time at Brewster thus far. When asked about any difficulty in the transition, Mitchell noted the toughest part was "getting used to not having to take every shot like I did last year and being more of a role player and knowing when to pick my spots."

It has become clear to both players and coaches across New England that Ed Cooley's priority for the 2015 recruiting class is none other than Donovan Mitchell. Cooley has made it clear he wants Mitchell in Friartown after his career at Brewster comes to an end. When asked to describe his relationship with Ed Cooley and the Providence staff, this is what Mitchell had to say. "I would say my relationship with Coach Cooley is very unique. He was one of the first to recruit me and is still hard on recruiting me now. I love the coaching staff and the way they have shown interest in me."

Mitchell went on to discuss the potential of attending Providence College and what makes the school an appealing opportunity. "The way they [Providence] play fits the way I play. I have a very good relationship with the coaching staff and so does my family. They are also a winning team year in and year out." Donovan also has a good relationship with incoming big man Paschal Chukwu. Mitchell has known Paschal for a long time, as they were from the same area growing up and often attended the same workouts.

As he continues to work on his jump shooting, which Mitchell feels will be what separates him from everyone once he reaches the college level, he will remain playing with the City (NY) on the AAU circuit this summer. Although not 100% sure of a timeline for a decision, he states that he does know it will come after the upcoming AAU season.
