U of L women claim title in Mexico

The University of Louisville women's basketball team never trailed in three games during the Hardwood Tournament of Hope in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico. The Cardinals whipped Oregon State 61-43 on Thursday night to win the event title.

The University of Louisville women's basketball team is 6-0 to start the season for the first time since the 2006-07 season.

The Cardinals stayed undefeated with a 61-43 victory over Oregon State on Thursday night in the championship game of the Hardwood Tournament of Hope. The No. 6 ranked Cardinals never trailed in three tournament games.

"I'm very proud of our effort," U of L coach Jeff Walz said. "Overall, I'm just very pleased but we still have a long way to go. We still have a lot of growing up to do. We have to get mentally tougher as we go on."

Sophomore Sara Hammond led the Cardinals with 17 points and eight rebounds, while junior Shoni Schimmel had 15 points on 5 of 8 three-point field goals.

Sophomore Jude Schimmel celebrated her 19th birthday with two points, four rebounds and a career-high seven assists. Antonia Slaughter added 10 points and five rebounds for the Cardinals.

Louisville finished 22 of 60 from the field, while holding Oregon State to 35 percent from the field. The Cardinals were 8 of 18 from the three-point line and 9 of 16 on free throws, while outrebounding Oregon State 41-30.

U of L had 15 assists on 22 field goals.

The Cardinals will play at UT-Martin on Monday night before returning home on Wednesday to host Eastern Kentucky University.
